“constellations (rumi maki)”

ArtWorks Mural

Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, Ohio

During the summer of 2025, I had the exciting opportunity to work as a seasonal Teaching Artist with ArtWorks, a Cincinnati-based nonprofit that creates community-centered public art and provides career opportunities for artists of all ages. As a Teaching Artist, I worked as one of three supervising artists leading our team of 19 Youth Apprentices, ages 14-21, on this massive mural! Every day for 8 weeks, I co-led our team of apprentices in the sketching, painting, and final execution of this very large project. We spent our days up on scaffolding in the hot summer sun bringing this work of art to life!

This mural “constellations (rumi maki)” was designed by internationally-acclaimed artist william córdova, whose work is rooted in his Peruvian-American identity and cosmology. The mural, explores "the synthesis of Andean, Afro and Nativity American geometry”, demonstrating a patchwork of intersecting histories, landscapes, and cultures, The work is part of córdova’s ongoing “rumi maki” series, showcasing smaller pieces constructed from recycled paint chips. “constellations (rumi maki)” is córdova’s first mural, bringing his work to a much, much larger scale for the first time!

Below are scenes from the mural dedication on August 24th, 2025.
